With the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, the streets of New York have no doubt been less crowded with both cars and pedestrians. Although this should mean that the rate of motor vehicle accidents deaths and injuries have decreased in the past year, the carnage has peaked during the height of the city’s COVID-19 lockdown, and in the months since. According to road safety expert Matt Carmody, fatalities went up because there was not the usual congestion, and people were able to drive much faster.
National stats released by the federal government in October 2020 tell a similar story: Despite a 16.6 percent decline in vehicle miles traveled nationwide in the first six months of 2020, pedestrian fatalities dropped just two percent, the Governors Highway Safety Association reported.
2021 has not started any better. Less than two weeks into the New Year and New York City has already witnessed severe accident related injuries and fatalities. On January 8th, the police responded to a 911 call for a crash at Cross Bay Boulevard and 163rd Avenue. Upon arrival, they found an unidentified woman in her 20s unconscious with severe leg and head injuries. The driver of the 1998 Ford Mustang who struck the victim remained at the scene of the accident and was not charged.
The day before also in Queens, a 16 year old Mustang driver died in a car crash after he lost control of his car. On January 7th around 2:50 pm, the driver was found dead a few blocks away from his home after he lost control of his vehicle as a result of speeding down 80th Avenue near 265th Street in Glen Oaks. He crashed into a tree on the side of the road. Before the young driver, who had passion for fast cars, hit the tree, he blew two stop signs and almost hit a pedestrian.

Getting the Compensation that You Deserve
Pedestrians in general have very little protection when hit by a car. Resulting injuries are often serious and even fatal, requiring extensive medical care and treatment.
