On August 16th and 17th, the Bronx community hosted the 9th Annual Gardiner Memorial Basketball Classic Tournament, the most exciting street ball on the East Coast. This event is held every year in St. James Park. It is run by The Gardiner Foundation and sponsored by Gersowitz, Libo & Korek, P.C. (Lawyertime.com). Thousands of people attended this year, enjoying free food, beverages and entertainment.
Saturday featured non-stop basketball action, with four games being played in an elimination-style format to move on towards the championship. Bronx City Council Member Fernando Cabrera addressed the crowd and commended the Gardiner Foundation for everything they have done for the St. James community.
Sunday’s activities included a Youth All-Star game, featuring The Gaucho’s CHOZ and Team United from Buffalo. It also showcased Team Lawyertime (New York) against Mama’s Boys (Bronx) in the finals. Street ball legend Mo Black and high school phenom Jaquan McKennon from Lawyertime couldn’t edge out And1’s “The Pharmacists” and former Providence standout Sheiku Kabba of Mama’s Boys.
About The Gardiner Foundation, Inc.
In 2006, Dexter Gardiner established The Gardiner Foundation in memoriam of six of his family members who lost their lives in a devastating car accident on the Bronx River Parkway. The Foundation builds upon Gardiner’s family legacy of helping others in need and involvement in the game of basketball by providing educational scholarships, financial and emotional support, and burial assistance to other families who have experienced an unexpected tragic loss.
Gersowitz, Libo & Korek, P.C. has been a title sponsor of this annual event since 2009. The money and manpower we donate each year provides various needs supported by The Gardiner Foundation.
