On August 17th and 18th, the Bronx community hosted the 8th Annual Gardiner Memorial Classic Tournament, the most exciting street ball on the East Coast. This event, which is held every year in St. James Park, is run by The Gardiner Foundation and sponsored by Gersowitz, Libo & Korek, P.C. (Lawyertime.com). They offered free food and beverages and endless entertainment to all spectators.

Saturday was filled with exciting games, which included monster jams, amazing ball-handling and hard-fought competition. The Kingsbridge Body Snatchers narrowly escaped defeat by Team Lawyertime.com by a point. But ultimately, Gun Hill, led by 16-year-old sensation Jaquan McKennon (named one of the country’s top 10 point guards by Slam Magazine), defeated the Body Snatchers and won the championship to claim this year’s golden watches.

The highlight of the second day of the Tournament was the Bronx coming together to honor their neighbors who have lost loved ones throughout the year and to support and encourage the youth of the community. The Gardiner Foundation handed out four scholarships to college-bound high school seniors (Naim Bligen, Dominique Henderson, Dajahn V. Meyers, and Terrell Segre), 150 knap sacks filled with school supplies, and fed more than 3,000 people. Most importantly, during a special sermon, the Foundation honored families who lost loved ones with special plaques prepared using generous donations.

About The Gardiner Foundation, Inc.

In 2006, Dexter Gardiner established The Gardiner Foundation in memoriam of six of his family members who lost their lives in a devastating car accident on the Bronx River Parkway. The Foundation builds upon Gardiner’s family legacy of helping others in need and involvement in the game of basketball by providing educational scholarships, financial and emotional support, and burial assistance to other families who have experienced an unexpected tragic loss.

Gersowitz, Libo & Korek, P.C. has been a title sponsor of this annual event since 2009. The money and manpower we donate each year provides various needs supported by The Gardiner Foundation.
