Three bicyclists were fatally struck and killed during a one week span in New York City.
On June 24th, Robyn Hightman, a bike courier, died after getting struck by a truck on 6th Avenue near 25th Street. Both the bicyclist and the trucker were heading in the same direction when they collided. Although the truck driver failed to initially stop after crashing into the bicyclist, he returned after a witness in another vehicle told him he hit someone. The truck driver was released after being hit with five summonses at the scene. According to Howsmydrivingnyc.com. the truck was hit with 83 violations, some which included speeding, since 2015. Robyn was the 12th bicyclist to be killed in traffic in NYC this past year.
On June 27th, 57 year old Ernest Askew was fatally struck by an 18 year old motorist on Sutter Avenue near Chester in Brownsville, Brooklyn. Both the driver and Askew were taken to the hospital, where Askew was pronounced dead and the driver was treated for a hand injury. No arrests were made.
A day later, on June 28th, StreetBlog.com announced that a Citi bike rider who was hit and severely injured by a truck in April near the Hudson yard also died from his injuries.
On July 1st, a cement truck fatally struck 28 year old Devra Freelander at the intersection of Buschwick Avenue and Boerum Street in East Williamsburg. According to surveillance footage, the truck approached the intersection at full speed before hitting the bicyclist. Devra is the 15th person to die in a bicycle related accident in NYC in 2019
