A bicyclist was fatally struck as he exited the Willis Avenue bike path by a dump truck driver on November 9, 2019. Matt Travis became the 28th person to die in a bicycle accident this year in NYC. The 25-year-old man was traveling south on a bike path coming off the Wills Avenue Bridge around 2:30 a.m. Saturday when a Kenworth dump truck driver traveling south on 1st Avenue made an illegal left turn onto East 125th Street in an attempt to get onto the bridge.
As the dump truck was turning, it struck Matt, sending him to the ground with severe body trauma. He was taken to Harlem Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The truck driver fled the scene of the accident, last seen traveling north on the bridge.
Matt Travis was a rising star pro wrestler and a student at the House of Glorty Wrestling School in Queens. Vice Magazine had interviewed him shortly before the crash about his passion for wrestling. Friends and fans have been posting tributes to Matt on social medial and at the location of the collision.
Bicycle Accident Causes
There are a number of factors and conditions that can lead to a life-altering or fatal bicycle accident. However, the most common include:
• Drivers failing to stop at crosswalks
• Motorists drifting into bike lanes
• Driver inattention
• Texting and driving
• Drivers failing to yield the right-of-way
• Impaired driving
• Impaired visibility
It is important to remember that bicycle accidents are not always caused by motorists. Uneven or broken pavement, debris in the roadway, and slippery, unsafe road conditions can also result in serious or deadly bike crashes. In such cases, the party (in most cases, government entities) that owns and maintains the road can be held responsible for the resulting injuries or death. As such, it is important to immediately consult and hire an experienced New York bicycle accident attorney to handle your claim.
