Twenty more women have sued Lyft, alleging that they were raped or sexually assaulted by ride-share drivers while using the service. These new suits add to a slew of legal complaints against the company from passengers who say there were targeted by drivers.
The lawsuit was filed by attorneys in San Francisco Superior Court on December 4th. It comes shortly after a complaint was filed in September on behalf of 14 women who alleged they were sexually assaulted or raped after Lyft let “known sexual predators” transport passengers in locations around the country, and the company’s safety oversights led to reports of sexual assault.
Lyft is the second-largest ride-hailing service in the U.S., with more than 2 million drivers and 30 million riders throughout Northern America and Canada. The company operates in all 50 states, coordinating millions of rides every day on its apps.
Lyft’s Failure to Adequately Respond to Allegations of Sexual Abuse by Drivers
According to the lawsuits, Lyft has not done enough to protect riders from sexual assault, leaving perpetrators to be easily drawn to Lyft to prey on vulnerable women riders. The lawsuits further allege that the 7-year-old company performs substandard background checks on drivers and often fails to deactivate them from the platform after sexual assault allegations.
The lawsuits also claim that Lyft tends to stonewall victims by ignoring, dismissing or downplaying their sexual assault assertions. Lyft riders who report sexual harassment or sexual assault to Lyft’s Trust & Safety Team are often left feeling no better off than had they not reported at all. The bottom line is that the lawsuits claim the rideshare company has failed to protect passengers and properly screen drivers.
