New York City construction sites recently experienced 2 more fatal accidents on the same day. The first fatality happened when a veteran construction worker lost his balance and fell off the 29th floor of the 1 Seaport Residence. He fell on the top of the scaffold bridge installed above the sidewalk at the construction site. The construction worker, who was trained and certified, was wearing his harness but it wasn’t attached to anything.
The day before that tragedy, the City’s Department of Buildings had issued a partial stop work order for the operation of a worksite crane. Investigation is still ongoing as to whether his death is directly related to that condition. The construction site was also hit with 28 complaints, including failure to safeguard workers.
The second accident happened later that same day, when two other construction workers fell 36 feet from a bucket lift at a construction site located at 401 9th Avenue. One of the workers died and the other was seriously injured. Both construction workers were wearing a safety harness, but neither was attached to the bucket.
More Accidents Evidence the Need for Safer Construction Site Procedures
Construction site accidents have become too common in New York. While some accidents cannot be avoided, most can be easily prevented. The number of fatal construction accidents can be significantly reduced if contractors simply ensure workers are working with adequate safety gear.
