A 68-year-old woman and a 10-year-old boy were killed in two separate truck accidents in New York City last week. Both accidents happened on the same day, January 7, 2020.
10-Year-Old Boy Fatally Struck by NYC Sanitation Truck
The first accident involved a young child, Shreejan Panthee, who was walking with his mom to school at around 7 a.m. While in the crosswalk near 97th Street in Corona, Queens, a NYC sanitation truck made a right turn on 57th Street from a nearby driveway and struck them.
Shreejan was run over by the rear wheels of the truck and his mom was knocked to the ground. Both were rushed to the hospital. Shreejan died a few hours later and his mother suffered critical injuries, but survived. The police have not immediately charged the truck driver. However, he has been placed on “modified duty” and stripped of his driving responsibilities by the NYC Sanitation Department.
68-Year-Old Woman Tragically Killed by a Cement Truck
The second tragic crash happened in Brooklyn a few hours later. A cement truck fatally hit a 68-year-old woman as she was crossing the street mid-block. She was slowly crossing the street with a cane through the traffic waiting at a red light on New Utrech Avenue in Borough Park. The light turned green for the traffic just as she walked in front of the cement truck, which moved forward and rolled over her.
She was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident. The truck driver stayed at the scene of the accident. The police did not charge the driver.
