15 People Injured In Queens Bus Accident At JFK Airport

QUEENS, NEW YORK (May 21, 2023) – At least 15 people were injured in a Delta Airlines bus accident with a commuter van at the John F Kennedy Airport.

New York City police officials are saying that the accident took place around 5:20 a.m. on Friday. A commuter van was heading northbound on the Van Wyck Expressway when it collided with the back of a Delta Airlines bus.

The Delta Airlines bus broke down prior to rear-ending the bus. Firefighters and paramedics were called to the scene in order to help the victims.

A total of 15 people were taken to the hospital. The commuter van was contracted by American Airlines at the time of the collision.

Liability For Queens Bus Accidents

Thousands of people are killed or seriously injured every year in bus accidents. According to the Journalist’s Resource, “about 63,000 buses [of all kinds] are involved in an accident each year; about 14,000 result in an injured person, and 325 result in a fatal injury.” There are a number of reasons that buses can be particularly dangerous.

  • Buses have large blind spots that can obscure the presence of other drivers.
  • Buses weigh much more than other passenger vehicles.
  • Buses take much longer to stop than most other vehicles on the road.

A large number of collisions are due to drivers that are speeding or failing to follow other vehicles at a safe distance. According to New York Vehicle and Traffic Law 1129, “The driver of a motor vehicle shall not follow another vehicle more closely than is reasonable and prudent, having due regard for the speed of such vehicles and the traffic upon and the condition of the highway.” There is a rebuttable presumption of negligence on the part of any driver that rear-ends another vehicle in their own lane. Victims of bus accidents tend to suffer very serious injuries including.

  • Spinal cord injuries
  • Lacerations
  • Broken bones
  • Head injuries
  • Soft tissue damage

Many accident victims may not realize the full extent of their injuries for several weeks or months after their accident. Any person that is injured due to the negligence of an airport employee may have legal recourse through a civil claim. Damages in a civil claim can help cover many of the expenses that come with a serious injury. A bus accident attorney can examine all of the unique facts of your case and let you know what your legal options are.
