12-Year-Old Girl Critically Injured In Manhattan Car Accident on Audubon Avenue and West 170th Street

Girl Seriously Injured In Washington Heights, Manhattan Collision By Audubon Avenue and West 170th Street

12-Year-Old Girl Critically Injured In Manhattan Car Accident on Audubon Avenue and West 170th Street

MANHATTAN, NEW YORK (March 12, 2022) – A 12-year-old girl was critically injured in a car accident near the intersection of Audubon Avenue and West 170th Street.

New York City police are saying that the collision took place around 12:25 p.m. on Thursday. Surveillance footage of the incident showed the girl attempting to cross a crosswalk when she was hit by a car.

A van appears to be blocking the girls view prior to the collision. Firefighters and paramedics were called to the scene of the collision in order to help the girl.

The girl was transported to New York-Presbyterian Hospital in critical condition. A full investigation into the Manhattan collision remains ongoing at this time.

Liability In Washington Heights Pedestrian Accidents

Despite numerous efforts to improve pedestrian safety, New York City still has far too many pedestrian collisions. According to the New York Post, “Pedestrian deaths in the city have surged 58 percent so far this year compared to the same period in 2020 — to 41 deaths from 26 — despite Mayor de Blasio’s “Vision Zero” program to make city streets less dangerous for walkers.” There are a number of steps that can be taken in order to help reduce pedestrian collisions.

  • Traffic violations likely to cause car accidents should be heavily enforced.
  • Intersections with many accidents should be studied.
  • Roads with a history of speeding should receive traffic calming measures.

All drivers must exercise due care in order to avoid hitting pedestrians, bicyclists and domestic animals in the roadway. If a driver goes past a yield sign without yielding and hits a pedestrian, this may be considered prima facie evidence of their failure to yield. It is extremely important that evidence is properly preserved after an accident.

  • Surveillance footage should be sought.
  • Medical records should be preserved.
  • Eye witnesses should be interviewed.
  • Photos of the accident site should be taken.

Any person that is injured in a car accident may have legal recourse through a bodily injury claim. Damages in a civil claim can help cover lost wages, medical bills and pain and suffering. Even after the physical injuries of an accident have healed, many people will suffer long-term psychological injuries. A New York City car accident attorney can examine all of the facts of your case and let you know what your legal options are.
