RSD – Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy – Nerve Damage from Trauma

Personal Injury LawyerReflex Sympathetic Dystrophy, or RSD, is a rare condition doctors do not know much about. In some cases, the nerve damage from trauma can cause this condition to occur. When that happens, it can lead to intense pain and permanent damage. If you are the victim of this type of trauma, discuss your case with our team of New York personal injury lawyers. We can aid in helping you to receive compensation you deserve from this potential malpractice or personal injury claim.

What Is RSD?

RSD, which is also known as Complex Regional Pain Syndrome, is a chronic pain condition. It is pain that seems extreme given the injury. The condition worsens over time. It usually affects just one area of the body at a time, such as the feet, hands, arms, or legs. The pain then spreads and can include the entire limb.

Please note – in many situations, RSD can be a type of medical malpractice. New York personal injury attorneys at our firm can help you to fight these situations to help you to obtain compensation for your loss, pain and suffering.

What Causes It?

Doctors are not sure what the underlying cause is, but it is possible that nerve damage from an injury, including traumatic events such as vehicle accidents, can lead to the condition. The sympathetic nervous system plays a role in this pain response. This leads to the most common symptoms of the condition, including inflammatory symptoms such as redness, swelling and increased temperature.

There are two forms of this condition:

  • CRPS Type 1 – This condition occurs when a nerve disorder becomes present in the limb after an injury occurs.
  • CRPS Type 2 – This condition occurs when the nerve itself sustains specific injury.

Most people suffer from the first form of this condition. This form occurs after a minor injury happens in the area of the nerve.

In the second form of the condition, severe trauma occurs to a limb and the nerve damage is often severe and noticeable. Many things can cause this type of incident, including any trauma to the affected limb, such as:

  • Poorly administered medications
  • Surgical procedures that cut into the nerve
  • Damage to the nerve resulting from a significant injury

If you suffered any of these symptoms, contact our New York personal injury attorneys to determine if someone’s actions or inactions resulted in your suffering. Our New York medical malpractice attorneys and personal claims attorneys will aid you in improving your situation by helping you to file an appropriate claim for compensation.

What Are the Symptoms of RSD?

Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy symptoms include:

  • Burning pain in the area
  • Skin sensitivity
  • Sweating
  • Swelling
  • Pain that worsens
  • Pain that seems extreme for the trauma or injury
