“The Clinton Foundation has made so many strides improving lives all over the world,” said Korek. “We were truly honored to have the opportunity to speak one-on-one with President Clinton and share our views on how to bring America back to the level we know we can be.”
Topics ranged from health care reform to education improvement to creation of more American jobs. Gersowitz and Korek both strongly suggested necessary changes in health care without balancing the budget on the backs of innocent victims (children and adults with permanent brain injury, those suffering from medical malpractice, victims of catastrophic accidents resulting from corporations gone wild in an era of little regulation, etc.)

Recap of 6th Annual Gardiner Memorial Basketball Classic Tournament
6TH ANNUAL
GARDINER MEMORIAL BASKETBALL CLASSIC BROUGHT NON-STOP ACTION, ENTERTAINMENT AND
SUPPORT TO THE BRONX
Five College-Bound Community Members Awarded $1,500
Scholarships
(Bronx, NY) August 15, 2011 – The Bronx was host to some of the best street ball on the East coast this past weekend for the 6th Annual Gardiner Memorial Basketball Classic Tournament, held in St. James Park and run by The Gardiner Foundation August 13 and 14, 2011. The tournament, sponsored by Gersowitz Libo & Korek, P.C. (Lawyertime.com), offered free food and beverages and non-stop entertainment to all spectators.
Saturday was filled with four electrifying games that saw monster jams, amazing ball-handling and hard-fought competition. State Senator Gustavo Rivera stopped by to show his support for the Gardiner Foundation and the Bronx community.

Sunday’s rain caused the Tournament to be moved indoors to the famous Gaucho’s Gym on Gerard Ave, but that didn’t stop the crowds from coming out to catch the live entertainment, semi-final action and the youth 12 and under all-star game. Most importantly, the Bronx came together to honor their neighbors who have lost loved ones throughout the year and to support and encourage the youth of the community. The Gardiner Foundation handed out five $1,500 scholarships to college-bound high school seniors, 100 backpacks filled with school supplies to youth in attendance and raffled off 13 laptops.

The Gardiner Foundation was established in 2006 by Dexter Gardiner, in memoriam of six of his family members who lost their lives in a horrific car accident on the Bronx River Parkway. Building upon his family’s legacy of helping others in need and involvement in the game of basketball, the Foundation embarked on a community outreach initiative that offers educational scholarships and financial support, emotional and spiritual guidance and burial assistance to other families in the community who have suffered a sudden and tragic loss. “Since its inception, The Foundation has awarded sixteen scholarships to students entering college for the first time and continues to be an expression of hope, resilience and commitment to the Bronx community,” said Alan Farrell, an organizer for The Gardiner Foundation’s two-day event.
Gardiner met Jeff Korek, a partner at the personal injury law firm Gersowitz Libo & Korek, P.C. (Lawyertime.com), a few years ago when they played in the same amateur basketball league. As Korek and Gardiner continued to play basketball together, Korek learned about The Gardiner Foundation and the amazing work it was doing for the community. After sharing this information with the rest of the firm, Gersowitz Libo & Korek, P.C. immediately wanted to help, and have been the title sponsors for the past three years.

“The Gardiner Foundation continues to be an inspiration to all New Yorkers, and Gersowitz Libo & Korek, P.C. is honored to be the title sponsor for the Tournament for the third straight year,” said Korek. “This tournament gets bigger each year, which enables the Gardiner Foundation to expand their reach and inspire so many more people in the Bronx community.”
The Kingsbridge Body Snatchers defeated the Shane All-Stars to claim this year’s golden watches for the second straight year. Standout Shabby Stanley was this year’s MVP.

More to come!
Recap of the Fifth Annual Gardiner Memorial Basketball Classic Tournament
The Bronx was full of fun and excitement August 14th and 15th as the Fifth Annual Gardiner Memorial Basketball Classic Tournament, sponsored by Gersowitz Libo and Korek, P.C.strong>, was held in St. James Park (Bronx, NY). Thousands of spectators came throughout this two day event to enjoy live entertainment, free food and beverages, high flying basketball action, and most importantly, to show love & support for their fellow community members.
The tournament kicked off Saturday with New York Knicks legend John Starks addressing the crowd and tossing up the opening tip-off. The rest of the day was filled with intense competition, where four of the eight teams were eliminated. Assemblyman Michael Benjamin and his Chief-of -Staff and wife Kennedy Benjamin stopped by that afternoon to honor The Gardiner Foundation for the work they do in the community and presented them with an official citation.
Sunday’s rain didn’t stop the crowds from attending throughout the day to catch the live entertainment, semi-final action and the youth 12 and under all-star game. Jack The Hoop Wizard Ryan entertained the crowd with his amazing shots and tricks. At one point, he was spinning ten basketballs at once!
Although local spectators and basketball fanatics were thoroughly entertained throughout the day, everyone remembered the real reason they were there- to support and encourage our youth and to bring the community together to honor and comfort those who have lost loved ones. Seventeen local families who have lost loved ones over the past year were presented with memorial plaques to show the community support during a powerful celebration of life and prayer for the families. Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz, Jr. then presented citations to 4 deserving college-bound high school seniors, along with four $1,500 scholarships from the Gardiner Foundation. The outdoor activities wrapped up with 13 laptops and a camera raffled off to local youth and distributed by current NBA superstar Ben Gordon of The Detroit Pistons and Jeff Korek, a partner of Gersowitz Libo and Korek.
By 6 pm on Sunday, the rain wouldn’t let up, and the championship game was moved from St. James Park to the legendary Gaucho’s Gym, also in the Bronx. The move didn’t dampen anyone’s spirit though, as the gym was packed with spectators to watch the Body Snatchers from Kingsbridge, coached by Dean and David Seagers, vs. the Sure Shots from the Fordham section, coached by Elana Moss. The Sure Shots kept it close for awhile, but the Body Snatchers ended up pulling away under the leadership of David Seagers and Lester Hunte. Some stand out players for the Sure Shots were Richard Forrea and Malloy Nesmith. The Body Snatchers won 115-97 and Seagers was named the MVP. During half time, 4 large flat screen TVs & one IPAD were raffled off to adults in the crowd, and the children in attendance were presented with backpacks filled with school supplies- 48 in total.
Gersowitz Libo and Korek, P.C. was proud and honored to be the title sponsor of this amazing event for the second year in a row, and we have already started planning for next year’s tournament!
